A FLORAL GESTURE

A floral gesture.
Takeaway magnolia.
A stack of Risograph prints, with a perspex sign indicating people can help themselves, is left in public places; shops, libraries, universities. Printed ephemera in the form of Risograph prints are designed to act as a takeaway floral gesture. They are disseminated by a member of the public picking one up and taking it home to enjoy, or gifting it to another. The gestures are made annually using photographs taken the previous season of one flowering, from the same red magnolia, in the artist’s front yard.

A floral gesture, iteration 2 was produced as part of the paper: Discursive acts: flowers and other things delivered at the Thirteenth International Conference on the Arts in Society, Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver, Canada: How Art Makes Things Happen—Situating Social Practice in Research, Practice, and Action. 27–29 June 2018.

There was an open invitation for confirmed conference presenters to stage socially-engaged artworks at the conference. Here is an edited excerpt from the paper, Discursive acts: flowers and other things, in reference to "A floral gesture" artwork:

    “My engagement with the floral began a long time ago, manifest within a sculpture and installation practice. In 2004, I began a number of durational works. These are: […] 5/ A floral gesture. I have been making ephemera in the form of takeaway printed matter designed to act as a floral gesture, disseminated through people picking it up and taking it home to enjoy. [There is one over there — —].”
